5 Benefits to Becoming An Authourity
Feb 10, 2026Hey guys, Rich Scott here with another quick video. Today we're gonna talk about the five benefits of becoming an authority in your field.
The Common Challenges When You’re Not Seen as an Authority
Let’s talk about becoming an authority in your field.
If you don't figure this out, a few common challenges show up over and over again. First, it’s usually a manual and difficult process to generate leads. There aren’t a lot of people knocking on your door.
Second, even when you do get leads, if you're not seen as an authority, you're constantly struggling with the rates you charge.
And third, you're almost always competing with someone else. If you’re not positioned as the authority, you're fighting to win business instead of being the obvious choice.
The Upside of Becoming an Authority
But it doesn’t have to be that way.
When you become an authority, people begin searching for you. You create more inbound opportunities because you're recognized as the expert in your space.
You’re also able to charge higher rates. When you're seen as someone with greater experience and expertise, higher pricing becomes natural and expected.
And instead of competing with multiple providers, you’re often the only one quoting — or the first and last person they talk to. You become the go-to person in your chosen field.
The Five Factors to Becoming an Authority
Let’s break down the five factors that help you become an authority.
Factor 1: Being Found
First, you have to be found. If nobody can find you, it doesn’t matter how good you are.
That means having a website, showing up online, appearing in trade publications, or being visible wherever your ideal clients spend time. To become an authority, you must be seen, heard, and discovered.
Factor 2: Being Friendly
Second is being friendly. You're not stingy or grumpy — you're willing to help, share, publish, and provide value.
Being approachable with colleagues, clients, and prospects still matters. Being friendly is a key ingredient in becoming a respected and trusted authority.
Factor 3: Focus
Third is focus. Many people try to do everything for everyone. But authority requires clarity.
That focus might be geographic, industry-specific, or service-based — but narrowing your expertise builds credibility and recognition.
Factor 4: Free Value
Fourth is providing free value. You can’t become an authority in secret.
Even though it may feel uncomfortable to give away knowledge, creating content, teaching, speaking, and sharing insights demonstrates your expertise publicly.
Free value builds trust, credibility, and visibility.
Factor 5: Being Featured
Finally, number five is being featured.
When you're found, friendly, focused, and consistently giving free value, other authorities begin to feature you — through interviews, collaborations, podcasts, or media opportunities.
If you skip the first four, being featured is rare. But when you build the foundation, it becomes almost inevitable.
